Hypnotherapy is a way of talking to your subconscious to help you change the way you think and behave. When you are in a hypnotic trance, the therapist can make powerful suggestions to your subconscious, suggestions that help you to make the changes you want to your life. When you are under hypnosis you are still awake and in control, but it is a little like those times when, for instance, you're driving and suddenly realise you've not actually noticed the last 10 minutes fly by. This is because it is a normal everyday experience for most people to be in a trancelike state, where the subconscious has taken over and you are not consciously doing whatever you were doing, but in automatic mode.
Over your lifetime behaviours and thoughts about yourself become ingrained, become part of your very being, This means that sometimes things people have said to you, labels they have given you, or labels you have given yourself, become part of your subconscious thinking; or self harming behaviours such as smoking, overeating, even biting your nails just become part of who you are. .You recognise that little voice in your head that says "you're not good enough" or "you're useless" or "you'll never amount to anything" or, well you get the picture, this is coming from your subconscious. These thoughts build up over the years and however much your conscious, alert, logical mind might say "that's rubbish, I'm good enough, of course I am", the subconscious overrides the conscious. It is only by talking directly to the subconscious that a therapist can help you change the way you think or behave, by, if you like, 'reprogramming' your thoughts or behaviours to more helpful, positive outcomes for you.
To give you a taster of how this might work for you, I've added a relaxation recording for you to listen to for free below.
